A location's menu can be de-activated from a group by either the merchant or the group's admin. De-activating a location's menu does NOT remove the location from the group but makes it so orders cannot be placed to that location within the group.
De-activating a location's menu within a specific group makes it impossible for customers to order from that location through the group. This is true no matter what "menu availability" option (open, closed, follow Square business hours, or paused) is currently selected by the location's vendor for their menu.
This is the best option if a particular location is NOT actively selling as part of a specific group currently but plans to sell as part of that group at some point in the future.
There are several situations in which this might be the case. For example, a food truck may be parked with other food trucks as part of Group A on Monday through Thursday and a different set of food trucks as part of Group B on Friday and Saturday. In this example, the food truck can be toggled active within Group A (and inactive within Group B) on Monday through Thursday and vice versa for Friday and Saturday. In this way, the food truck's menu is ONLY available to customers through the relevant group on each specific day.
Both the vendor AND the group admin, who set up a specific group, can toggle a location's menu as active or inactive within a group. Additionally, Porter gives the group admin the option to either display or hide inactive locations within a group.
